A Study on Status of Mental Health in High School Girls -Their Attitudes Toward Menarche and Menstruation-


Abstract
In an attempt to assist in fulfilling the mental health education for, high school girls effectively, a study on their attitudes toward menarche and menstruation was carried out by surveying -1889 high -school girls in Kwangju.
The results obtained were as follows.
1. The vast majority of respondents (97. 4%) experienced menarche, and about half of them had the knowledge about it before menarche.
2. The respondents revealed the feeling toward menarche such as surprise (50.4%), fear and shame (30.5%). The higher number was related to the ignorance about its information.
3. The respondents revealed the same feeling toward menstruation as the toward menarche.
4. 45.3% of respondents complained of symptoms during menstruation such as abdominal pain (45.3%), lumbago (39.1%) and inactivity of day life(38.0%).
5. 74.1 % of respondents are eager to know the female physiology in the concrete.
On the basis of these results, for the security of mental health in high school girls, the more effective education and direction on the sex information seems to be required.
